Omarion Hampton Rookie Profile
Omarion Hampton — the 22 year old, 22nd overall pick from North Carolina — profiles as a classic workhorse running back with a rare combination of power, size, and surprising elusiveness.
Year 1 might prove somewhat frustrating: The Chargers signed Najee Harris to a one year contract to provide plenty of competition for touches if and when he's healthy, and Greg Roman's offenses don't have a terrific history of throwing to running backs.
That said, Hampton comes with an expensive 1st round price tag for the Chargers, Harris is on an incentive-based 1 year deal, and, quite simply, Hampton is just BETTER than Harris is. Regardless, there will be no shortage of overall volume in a Greg Roman offense that's finished 11th or higher in rushing attempts in all 11 years that he's been an Offensive Coordinator in the NFL, including 7 seasons inside the top 3.
Bottom line: Hampton is a high-floor, high-upside back who has what it takes to be an RB 1 in fantasy football.
Would I take Alvin Kamara or Omarion Hampton?
Alvin Kamara presents a known commodity, someone who is going to rack up a ton of points in PPR settings from catching the balls out of the backfield on what will likely be a bottom-tier offense. That's good to have when you're chasing stability. But at this price tag, I also want someone who I think could end up even higher than where they're being drafted - and for me, that's Omarion Hampton.
The Greg Roman offense is tailored specifically to fit what Omarion Hampton brings to the table. Even if Najee gets a portion of the work when he's back on the field, Hampton will have ample opportunities to showcase his talent in this offense.
This decision is closest in PPR settings, for reasons stated above, but anything below that and the choice of Omarion Hampton becomes even easier.
