Bye weeks and injuries are out of control. Time to lock in and nail your waiver claims.
Below are the top week 9 waiver wire adds to improve your team at RB, WR, TE, QB and DEF. If any of the players below have a realistic chance of making it into your starting lineup, then they're worth spending priority on (except for defenses). If not, then don't spend priority and add them after waivers clear.
Here are our top week 9 waiver wire adds to take your fantasy football team to the next level.
Running Backs
🔵 Jonah Coleman - Somehow still available in 28% of Yahoo fantasy football leagues and 48% of ESPN leagues. If that's the case in yours, change that.
🔵 Seth McGowan - Jonathan Taylor's days in Indy appear to be numbered. If he's traded, Seth McGowan figured to step in as the team's de facto RB 1, with 2nd year back DJ Giddens also vying for touches. It's not going to be pretty, but McGowan will see fantasy-relevant volume.
🟢 Tyler Allgeier - Jeremiyah Love left week 8 with yet another ankle injury and did not return. Allgeier then went bananas, handling 16 touches — including 5 targets/catches — for 191 yards and 2 TDs (36.1 PPR points). Bam Knight remained in the mix and will likely be involved in week 9, but Allgeier stole the show in week 8 and will be the primary option if Love misses time. That said, beware his brutal matchup with the Seahawks in week 9, and don't forget that Allgeier averaged just 8.9 PPR points per game despite 14.8 touches per game in the prior 4 outings where he handled 10+ touches.
🟢 Mike Washington - Mike Washington shockingly handled 80.6% of the Raiders' backfield touches in week 8, toting the rock 25 times for 83 scoreless yards and 8.3 PPR points. Meanwhile, Ashton Jeanty handled just 2 carries for 9 scoreless yards, but also caught 3 of 4 targets for 64 scoreless yards (10.3 PPR points). I seriously doubt this was a full-blown takeover by Mike Washington — the Raiders aren't going to let last year's 6th overall draft pick just disappear in his 2nd season — but it's clear that Washington needs to be rostered in all fantasy football leagues.
🟡 Kenny Gainwell - Handled 25 carries for 140 scoreless yards and 14 PPR points. It was the 2nd week in a row that Gainwell handled 14 or more touches. That said, week 7 was a garbage-time blowout win over the Panthers, and the Buccaneers threw the ball just 3 times total in week 8. Gainwell handled 3-7 touches in each of the Bucs' prior 6 games and will likely return closer to that norm in week 9 against the Bears.
🟡 Dylan Sampson - 8 targets, 6 catches and 62 receiving yards (12.9 PPR points) in week 8. On the RB 3/flex radar in PPR leagues.
🟡 Justice Hill - 8 targets (but only 4 catches for 20 yards) in week 8. Ravens likely to experience negative, pass-heavy game script for the next several weeks without Lamar Jackson or Tyler Huntley. Hill will offer some PPR flex appeal in deeper leagues.
🟡 Emmett Johnson - Already an elite bench stash, Emmett Johnson randomly popped for 5 targets, 5 catches, 128 receiving yards, 1 TD and 25.3(!) PPR points in week 8. Time will tell if he'll maintain that receiving role, but he should be rostered as an elite bench stash anyways, one that becomes an instant RB 2 with RB 1 upside if something happens to Kenneth Walker.
🟡 Kaelon Black - Just a reminder that, before the 49ers' week 8 bye, Christian McCaffrey briefly left week 7 with a thigh injury. He later returned to action and is probably good to go for week 9, but the talented RB 2 in San Francisco should be on fantasy football benches as one of the elite stashes in the game.
🟡 Devin Singletary - Similarly to Kaelon Black above, Cam Skattebo injured his hamstring in week 7 before the Giants' week 8 bye. Tyrone Tracy is on IR, leaving Singletary as a top 2 options in what's been a largely unsettled Giants' backfield this season. Singletary would be in line for 15+ touches if Skattebo missed time, and may get some passing down work regardless.
🟡 MarShawn Lloyd - More allegations have surfaced about Josh Jacobs' conduct. It's entirely unclear if they'll go anywhere or if Jacobs is in any further danger of getting suspended (or cut?), but Lloyd needs to be monitored just in case.
🟠 Sione Vaki - Handled a season high 12 touches for 70 scoreless yards in a run-heavy week 8 approach against the blitz-happy Vikings. Could get some garbage-time work in a blowout win and top-3 matchup vs the Dolphins in week 9.
🟠 Tank Bigsby or Elijah Mitchell - Tank Bigsby served his 4-game IR stint and could return to the field as Philadelphia's surefire RB 2 behind a banged-up Saquon Barkley. If not, Elijah Mitchell will continue to serve as the Eagles' RB 2. He had 15 touches — including 4 catches on 6 targets — for 37 scoreless yards (7.7 PPR points) in week 8.
🟠 Jonathon Brooks - Could return soon. To what role, nobody knows.
Wide Receivers
🟡 Devaughn Vele - Averaging 12.3 PPR points and 6.9 very nice targets per game, but somehow still available in 48% of fantasy football leagues.
🟡 Deebo Samuel - Has a chance to return from the hamstring injury that's kept him out since week 5. Averaging 12.5 PPR points per game in 5 games this year.
🟡 Khalil Shakir - Another 6 targets, 5 catches, 64 scoreless yards and 11.4 PPR points for Khalil Shakir in week 8. He's averaging 12.8 PPR points and 5.8 targets per game over his last 4 games, yet he's available in 47% of fantasy football leagues. Has some tough matchups with the Vikings, Dolphins and Chiefs in 3 of the next 4 weeks however.
🟡 Keenan Allen - Another 7 targets, 7 catches, 67 scoreless yards and 13.7 PPR points for Keenan Allen in week 8. He's averaging 10.6 PPR points and 7.1 targets per game, yet he's available in 49% of fantasy football leagues. Great matchups with the Cowboys and Texans in 2 of the next 3 weeks.
🟡 Malik Washington - Another 6 targets, 5 catches, 40 yards and 1 TD (season-high 15 PPR points) in week 8. He's averaging 10.5 PPR points and 6.4 targets per game, yet he's available in 52% of fantasy football leagues. Mouthwatering matchup and pass-heavy game script vs the Lions in week 9.
🟡 Caleb Douglas - 6 targets, 4 catches and 43 scoreless yards (8.3 PPR points) in week 8. Now has 43 or more yards in 3 of 4 games this season, with a mouthwatering matchup and pass-heavy game script vs the Lions in week 9.
🟡 Makai Lemon - Philly's 1st round pick has strung together the best 2 games of his career over the last 2 weeks, compiling 17 targets, 13 catches, 124 yards, 1 TD and 31.4 PPR points. DeVonta Smith hasn't practiced in weeks and is far from a lock to return in week 9.
🟡 Adonai Mitchell - Caught 7 of 9 targets for 142 yards, 1 TD and 27.2 PPR points in a week 8 shootout with the Raiders. As 9.5 point road underdogs, expect a pass-heavy approach from the Jets in week 9 as they try to keep up with the Chiefs, albeit a very difficult matchup.
🟡 Antonio Williams - Caught 5 of 7 targets for 54 scoreless yards and 10.4 PPR points in his first game without Terry McLaurin. We could see a pass-heavy approach for the Commanders as 5.5 point underdogs against the Rams in week 9, albeit in a tough matchup.
🟡 Jordyn Tyson - Solid IR stash with a crazy high ceiling if he can ever find his way onto the football field.
🟠 Treylon Burks - Caught 3 of 5 targets for 81 scoreless yards (11.1 PPR points). Now has 5-6 targets and 10-12 PPR points in 3 of the last 4 games. We could see a pass-heavy approach for the Commanders as 5.5 point underdogs against the Rams in week 9, albeit in a tough matchup.
🟠 Wan'Dale Robinson - Caught 6 of 7 targets for 57 yards, 1 TD and 17.7 PPR points in a week 8 shootout with the Bengals. The Titans are on bye this week however, which won't help you now.
🟠 Chimere Dike - Randomly popped up for a season high 82% snap share, catching 5 of 6 targets for 71 yards, 1 TD and 18.1 PPR points. The Titans are on bye this week however, which won't help you now.
Tight Ends
🟡 Greg Dulcich - Another 6 targets, 4 catches, 43 yards and 8.3 PPR points in week 8. Now averaging 8.0 PPR points and 4.6 targets per game over his last 4 games, and has a mouthwatering matchup vs the league-worst Lions in week 9.
🟡 Mason Taylor - Another 5 targets in week 8, giving him 5-6 targets in each of the last 3 games. Great matchup and a pass-heavy game script vs the Chiefs in week 9.
🟡 Michael Mayer - 6 targets, 5 catches, 53 yards and 10.3 PPR points in a shootout with the Jets in week 8. Averaging 10.4 PPR points and 5.3 targets per game in 6 games with Brock Bowers. Tough matchups vs the 49ers and Seahawks in the next 2 weeks.
🟠 Mike Gesicki - Another 6 targets, 4 catches, 76 yards, 1 TD and 17.6 PPR points in week 8. This dude has 1 TD in 6 of 7 games this season (unsustainable). As a result, he's averaging 11.0 PPR points per game, but on only 3.4 targets per game. Good matchup vs the Falcons in week 9, but be careful about chasing his unsustainable touchdown streak.
🟠 Oronde Gadsden - Another 5 targets in week 8, giving him 5+ targets in 3 of the last 4 games. That said, he's averaging just 5.9 PPR points per game during that stretch and has a tough matchup with the Texans in week 9.
🟠 Gunnar Helm - Randomly popped up for season highs in targets (9), catches (5), yards (76) and PPR points (12.6). The Titans are on bye this week however, which won't help you now.
Quarterbacks
🟢 Sam Darnold - The Seahawks have a high projected point total (28) and Sam Darnold has a top 3 matchup vs the Cardinals in week 9.
🟡 Malik Willis - Averaging 15 fantasy points per game this season and now gets the best matchup he'll have all year, a Lions "defense" that's allowing the most fantasy points per game to QBs.
🟡 Michael Penix - I know I know. 4 interceptions. But fantasy football is about looking ahead and Michael Penix finds himself in a potential shootout with the Bengals, the very same defense that just allowed a career high 24.26 fantasy points to Cam Ward.
🟠 JJ McCarthy - Balled out on just 31 snaps in week 6 (14.3 fantasy points) and then scored 10.2 points in week 7. Favorable matchup vs the Eagles (9th most fantasy points allowed to QBs) in week 9. I'd prefer Willis and Penix, personally.
🟠 Daniel Jones - Good matchup and a mediocre projected team total (23 points) vs the Cowboys in week 9. That's the extent of my optimism here.
Team Defense
Here are the defenses I'm targeting after waivers clear:
🔵 Seahawks vs Cardinals
🔵 Jaguars at Ravens
🟢 Texans at Chargers
🟢 Giants at Eagles
🟢 Chiefs vs Jets
🟡 Broncos at Panthers
🟡 Bears vs Buccaneers
🟡 Saints vs Browns
