I believe this might be a first for me this season after over 170 drafts to date - taking both an elite QB and elite TE on the same team within the first four rounds. In fact, I ended up taking one of each position in the first four rounds.
Naturally, this goes against the grain of what normally happens on my teams and what's normally found on the top finishing best ball teams, but again, having some opportunities to diversify both the players and the types of teams you build is something that you should strive to do - not shy away from - when the board falls right.
Let's look at team eight of my DraftKings Best Ball Millionaire portfolio.
The team, position by position
2 QBs
7 RBs
9 WRs
2 TEs
As I normally try to do when I'm drafting elite players at QB and TE, I stuck with just two at each. This is obviously additionally risky compared to normal, but I wanted those extra roster spots to bolster up the talent gap at the two primary positions that end up being most important in many cases.
How I bolstered myself at WR and RB
Let's start at wide receiver. I took the approach here to find high volume guys across the board, prioritizing them as much as I could. In the end, I took six wide receivers in the first 11 rounds: Tee Higgins, Terry McLaurin, Jerry Jeudy, Chris Olave, Darnell Mooney and Keenan Allen. If I can get as much high floor as possible, with access to upside in select scenarios, I think it closes the gap enough to keep that position afloat while I dominate at QB and TE relative to the field.
At running back, I took the opposite approach: I have a true Hero RB build with an elite talent at the top and a bunch of risky dart throws behind him: injured and falling Joe Mixon, who-knows-what-happens Quinshon Judkins, and true handcuff backs in Isaac Guerendo, Roschon Johnson and DJ Giddens.
The stacks
Washington Commanders double stack
QB Jayden Daniels (pick 47)
RB Austin Ekeler (pick 146)
WR Terry McLaurin (pick 50)
The one running back I didn't list above was Austin Ekeler, who acts as my backstop floor piece at the position with the real risk that Joe Mixon and Quinshon Judkins are limited in the early part of the season. He'll act as my stabilizer to make sure I'm not chasing too many points. He's at a price that it's an easy click for me in that role in these contests.
Arizona Cardinals single stack
QB Kyler Murray (pick 95)
TE Trey McBride (pick 23)
I took a different Cardinals stack in my last draft, but the concept remains the same: Kyler can run, there's two main target guys, pair him with one of them and append something else on if you feel like it but it's not necessary.
Playoff correlations
Giants WR Darius Slayton plays the Commanders in week 15.
Texans RB Joe Mixon plays the Cardinals in week 15.
Falcons RB Bijan Robinson - my hero! - and WR Darnell Mooney play the Cardinals in week 16.
Bengals WR Tee Higgins plays the Cardinals in week 17.
Cowboys WR Kavontae Turpin plays the Commanders in week 17.
