Fantasy Football:

The Dallas Cowboys are entering year 5 of the Mike McCarthy era, one that’s been largely successful to this point, winning 12 games and making the playoffs in each of the last 3 seasons (albeit with a 1-3 record when they get there).

Last year’s Dallas defense was one of the best in the business, frustrating opposing fantasy managers and holding enemy NFL offenses to the 5th fewest points and 5th fewest yards.

But like NBA players, we’re not here to talk about defense. We’re here to talk about offense. We’re here to talk about fantasy football.

And from a fantasy football standpoint, the Mike McCarthy era has been gold over the last 3 years, finishing:

🔥 1st, 4th and 1st in scoring

🔥 1st, 11th and 5th in offensive yards

🔥 12th, 6th and 14th in rushing attempts

🔥 9th, 9th and 14th in rushing yards

🔥 17th, 2nd and 15th in rushing TDs

🔥 6th, 19th and 8th in passing attempts

🔥 2nd, 14th and 3rd in passing yards

🔥 3rd, 9th and 1st in passing TDs

Candidly, the Cowboys’ offense surprised in 2023 when they played with a pass-heavy approach after moving on from Offensive Coordinator wonderkind Kellen Moore, stating they “just want to run the damn ball” and subsequently replacing him with previously archaic Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

And it worked, finishing top 15 in basically every relevant offensive category.

They offered plenty of volume, finishing:

✅ 3rd in offensive plays executed

✅ 8th in passing attempts

✅ 14th in rushing attempts

They offered plenty of yardage and efficiency, finishing:

✅ 5th in offensive yards

✅ 6th in yards per offensive play

✅ 1st in scoring percentage (50.3%)

They offered plenty of touchdown opportunities, finishing:

✅ 1st in red zone attempts

✅ 5th in red zone TDs

✅ 14th in red zone percentage

✅ 1st in overall scoring

They were above average in the rushing game, finishing:

✅ 14th in rushing yards

✅ 15th in rushing TDs

They were ELITE in the passing game, finishing:

✅ 1st in pass completions

✅ 1st in completion percentage

✅ 3rd in passing yards

✅ 5th in yards per pass attempt

✅ 2nd in passing TD percentage

✅ 1st in passing TDs

And heck, for those of you in leagues that award fantasy points for 1st downs, last year’s Cowboys finished 1st in the entire NFL in 1st downs cuz why not.

✅ 1st in 1st downs including…

✅ 1st in passing 1st downs

TLDR: Last year’s Cowboys checked every box in fantasy football, offering plenty of volume, efficiency, yardage and scoring chances.

And it showed up at the individual level, where Dak Prescott was fantasy’s QB 3, Tony Pollard was fantasy’s RB 14—which was actually a bit of a disappointment considering his environment and opportunity—CeeDee Lamb was fantasy’s WR 1, Brandin Cooks was fantasy’s WR 38, and Jake Ferguson was fantasy’s TE 9.

So where do CeeDee Lamb and company fit into BBFF's 2024 fantasy football rankings?

Heading into 2024, Dallas should offer plenty more fantasy football fireworks with a locker room that’s nearly identical to last year, bringing back McCarthy and Schottenheimer, Prescott, Lamb, Cooks and Ferguson.

The only noteworthy change to Dallas’ offense is that Tony Pollard—who accounted for 34% of the Cowboys offensive touches in 2023—skipped town for the Tennessee Titans, pressing the Cowboys into signing familiar face Ezekiel Elliott, who’s already the 3rd leading rusher in Dallas Cowboys history.

Indeed, Vegas Sportsbooks are expecting continued success for the Cowboys (see betting odds above) and their individual players, giving Dak Prescott the 3rd best odds of leading the NFL in passing yards and 11th best odds of winning MVP, and giving CeeDee Lamb the 2nd best odds of leading the NFL in receiving yards and the 3rd best odds of winning Offensive Player of the Year.

Dallas is an offense to invest in in 2024 fantasy football.

BUT...

As elite as the Cowboys' offense is, are their players worth the costs associated with them in 2024 fantasy football drafts?

Are we drafting CeeDee Lamb, Jake Ferguson, Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, Brandin Cooks, Rico Dowdle and Jalen Tolbert at their respective costs?
